Significance of Vat Savitri Vrat

Vat Savitri Vrat is considered auspicious for granting prosperity and aiding in the fulfillment of progeny desires. In Indian culture, this fast has come to symbolize ideal womanhood. According to the Skanda Purana and the Bhavishyottara Purana, this vrat should be observed on the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) in the month of Jyeshtha. However, texts like Nirnayamrita mention that it should be observed on the Amavasya of the Jyeshtha month. On this day, worship is offered to Satyavan, Savitri, and Yama (the god of death). The vrat is significant as Savitri, by the virtue of her devotion and the power of this fast, was able to reclaim her deceased husband Satyavan from Yama.

Rituals of Vat Savitri Vrat

On this auspicious day, all married women perform the Vat Savitri Vrat by adorning themselves with sixteen traditional adornments, known as ‘Solah Shringar’, and worshiping the Banyan tree. This is done to pray for their husband’s long life. According to mythological tales, Savitri, with her unwavering determination and devotion, was able to bring her deceased husband, Satyavan, back to life from Yama (the god of death) on this day. Hence, it is believed that women who perform this vrat like Savitri can protect their husbands from all impending dangers.

On this day, women worship Savitri and Satyavan along with other deities under the Banyan tree, which is why the vrat is named Vat Savitri. The vrat is believed to bestow a blessed and prosperous married life and is also performed for the well-being of the entire family. Savitri not only regained her husband’s life from Yama but also secured blessings for her family’s welfare.

Puja Materials for Vat Savitri Vrat

According to scriptures, the materials used in the Vat Savitri Vrat hold special significance. It is believed that the worship is incomplete without the proper materials. Essential items for the puja include:

  • A bamboo fan
  • Red or yellow thread
  • Incense sticks
  • Flowers
  • Five types of fruits
  • A water-filled vessel
  • Vermillion
  • A red cloth

Women wake up early in the morning, complete their daily chores, and purify themselves by bathing. They then wear new clothes, perform the ‘Solah Shringar,’ and gather all the puja materials in a basket or plate. After cleaning the area under the Banyan tree, they place the puja items and start the rituals. First, they install the idols of Satyavan and Savitri. They then perform the worship using incense sticks, lamps, roli (red powder), soaked chickpeas, and vermillion.

The women offer the red cloth and fruits, fan the idols with the bamboo fan, and adorn their hair with a Banyan leaf. They then wrap the thread around the tree and circumambulate it as many times as possible, traditionally 3, 5, 7, 11, 21, 51, or 108 times. Finally, they listen to or read the story of Savitri and Satyavan, offer Dakshina (a donation) to the priest if available, and then fan their husbands with the same fan to receive their blessings. They conclude the fast with sweet food in the evening.
