Shri Rudrashtakam: A Sacred Hymn for Fulfilling All Desires

Shri Rudrashtakam (Sanskrit: श्री रुद्राष्टकम्) is a devotional hymn composed by Goswami Tulsidas in praise of Lord Shiva. It is mentioned in the Uttara Kanda of the Shri Ramcharitmanas. Reciting this hymn is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and fulfillment of all desires.

Shri Rudrashtakam

Verse 1:
Namāmīśamīśāna Nirvāṇarūpaṃ, Vibhuṃ Vyāpakaṃ Brahmavedasvarūpaṃ, Nijaṃ Nirguṇaṃ Nirvikalpaṃ Nirīhaṃ, Chidākāśamākāśavāsaṃ Bhaje’ham.

“I bow to the Supreme Lord Shiva, the master of all directions, who is the embodiment of liberation, omnipresent, the essence of Brahman and the Vedas. I worship Him, who is free from attributes, beyond all forms, devoid of desires, and who abides in the sky of consciousness, wearing the sky as His garment.”

Verse 2:
Nirākāra Omkāramūlaṃ Turīyaṃ, Girā Jñāna Gotītamīśaṃ Girīśam, Karālaṃ Mahākāla Kālaṃ Kṛpālaṃ, Guṇāgāraṃ Saṃsāra Pāraṃ Natho’ham.

“I bow to the Lord, who is formless, the source of the Omkara, beyond the three gunas (qualities), beyond speech and knowledge, the Lord of Kailash, terrifying, the Lord of time, compassionate, the abode of all virtues, and who is beyond the cycle of birth and death.”

Verse 3:
Tuṣārādri Saṃkāśa Gauram Gambhīraṃ, Manobhūta Koṭi Prabhā Śrīśarīraṃ, Sphuranmauli Kallolini Cārugaṅgā, Lasadbhaala Bālendu Kaṇṭhe Bhujanga.

“I worship the Lord, who is as white as the Himalayas, deep and serene, whose body shines like millions of cupids, who has the beautiful river Ganga flowing from His hair, the crescent moon on His forehead, and a serpent adorning His neck.”

Verse 4:
Chalatkuṇḍalaṃ Bhṛūsunetraṃ Viśālaṃ, Prasannānanaṃ Nīlakaṇṭhaṃ Dayālaṃ, Mṛgādhīśa Carmaṃbaraṃ Muṇḍamālaṃ, Priyaṃ Śaṃkaraṃ Sarvanāthaṃ Bhajāmi.

“I worship Lord Shankara, whose earrings swing gracefully, who has a wide forehead and large eyes, who has a compassionate face, is blue-throated, merciful, wears a tiger skin, and a garland of skulls, and who is the beloved of all beings.”

Verse 5:
Prachāṇḍaṃ Prakṛṣṭaṃ Pragalbhaṃ Pareśaṃ, Akhaṇḍaṃ Ajaṃ Bhānukoṭi Prakāśaṃ, Trayaḥ Śūlanirmūlanaṃ Śūlapāṇiṃ, Bhaje’haṃ Bhavānīpatiṃ Bhāvagamyaṃ.

“I bow to Lord Bhavani’s consort, the fierce, the excellent, the most powerful, the eternal, the unborn, whose brilliance surpasses millions of suns, who holds the trident that destroys the threefold miseries, and who is accessible through pure devotion.”

Verse 6:
Kalātīta Kalyāṇa Kalpāntakārī, Sadāsadcidānanda Dātā Purāri, Cidānanda Sandohamohāpahāri, Prasīda Prasīda Prabho Manmathāri.

“O Lord, who is beyond all arts, who is the bestower of auspiciousness, who brings about the end of creation, who grants the eternal bliss of truth and consciousness, who removes delusion, who is the enemy of Kamadeva, please be pleased with me.”

Verse 7:
Navāvat Umānāthapādāravindaṃ, Bhajantīha Loke Pare Vā Narāṇāṃ, Na Tāvat Sukhāṃ Śānti Santāpanāśaṃ, Prasīda Prabho Sarvabhūtādhivāsaṃ.

“As long as people do not worship the lotus feet of Uma’s husband, they do not attain happiness, peace, or relief from suffering in this world or the next. Therefore, O Lord, who resides in the hearts of all beings, be pleased with me.”

Verse 8:
Na Jānāmi Yogaṃ Japaṃ Naiva Pūjāṃ, Nato’haṃ Sadā Sarvadā Śaṃbhu Tubhyaṃ, Jarājanna Dukhaughatāpyamānaṃ, Prabho Pāhi Āpanna Namāmīśa Śambho.

“I do not know the practice of yoga, chanting of mantras, or rituals of worship. I only bow to you, O Lord Shambhu, always and forever. O Lord, who is my protector, save me from the suffering caused by old age and the cycle of birth and death. I bow to you, O Lord Shambhu.”

Conclusion:
Rudrāṣṭakamidaṃ Proktaṃ Vipreṇa Haratoṣaye, Ye Paṭhanti Narā Bhaktyā Teṣāṃ Śambhuḥ Prasīdati.
