Pitru Suktam – Hymn to Ancestors

According to religious texts, reciting the Pitru Sukta during the Shraddha period is highly effective in removing Pitru Dosha (ancestral afflictions). Merely reading this hymn during the days of Shraddha brings auspicious results in life and receives the blessings of the ancestors. Lighting an oil lamp in the evening and chanting the Pitru Sukta during the Shraddha period brings peace to the souls of the ancestors and removes ancestral curses. Therefore, individuals facing difficulties in life should recite this hymn daily.

Here is the complete Pitru Suktam:

Pitru Suktam

  1. Let the ancestors who dwell in the heavenly regions, the lower regions, and the middle regions, the wise and those who drank Soma, who had passed away, support us in our offerings.
  2. Let the Angirases, our ancestors, the Navagvas, Atharvans, and Bhrigus, the Soma-drinkers, be pleased with our praises, and may we prosper with their blessings.
  3. Our ancestors, the Vasishtas, who partook of Soma, our forefathers, let Yama, alongside them, consume our offerings, and let them bless us.
  4. O Soma, you know our wisdom and guide us along the best paths. With your guidance, our ancestors among the gods attained great treasures.
  5. Through you, O Soma, our wise forefathers performed noble deeds. They shattered obstacles, secured victories, and became wealthy and strong.
  6. In union with the ancestors, you, Soma, expand the heavens and earth. For that reason, O Lord of Soma, we offer you our oblations so we may be blessed with prosperity.
  7. May the ancestors who sit at the holy sacrificial fire accept our offerings and come to our aid with happiness and goodwill, removing all sorrows.
  8. I invoke the wise ancestors and the steps of Vishnu. Let those who partake in Soma here, seated on the sacrificial grass, come to us swiftly.
  9. The ancestors who drank Soma, let them hear our invocation, arrive here, and accept our offerings. May they bless us and grant us protection.
  10. Let our Soma-drinking ancestors, those purified by fire and on divine paths, come joyfully to our offerings. Let them speak to us kindly and bless us.
  11. O ancestors purified by fire, come here, sit well-guided on this sacred grass, consume our offerings, and grant us wealth and progeny.
  12. The ancestors, both those purified by fire and those who are not, rejoicing in heaven, let them receive these offerings and bless us.
  13. Let the ancestors, the wise ones who drank Soma and performed rituals, be pleased with our praises and bless us with prosperity.
  14. Sitting to the south of the sacrificial fire, the ancestors accept our praises. Let them not be harmed by any transgressions of ours; may they forgive our human errors.
  15. Sitting at the lap of the dawn, O ancestors, bestow wealth upon the worshipper. Grant strength and nourishment to the children and secure prosperity for the family.

Reciting this sacred Pitru Sukta during the Shraddha period is believed to bring peace and liberation to the ancestors, ensuring their blessings and the removal of obstacles in life.
